Choosing a Wedding Muhurtha: What the Shastras Actually Check
A vivaha muhurtha (వివాహ ముహూర్తం) is not one lucky time pulled from a calendar — it is a stack of classical checks on the day, the moment, and both charts. What a proper muhurtha examination covers, and why the same date can be right for one couple and wrong for another.
More Than a Date on a Calendar
Families often arrive with a printed calendar date circled in red. But a వివాహ ముహూర్తం fixed by the shastras is not a property of the calendar alone — it is the meeting point of an auspicious day, an auspicious moment, and the two horoscopes it must serve. The same evening can be excellent for one couple and inadvisable for another.
Here is what a proper examination checks, layer by layer.
1. Panchanga Shuddhi — the Day Itself
The five limbs of the day must each be clean:
- Tithi: Rikta tithis (4, 9, 14) and dagdha combinations are set aside; Amavasya is avoided
- Vara: the weekday and its lord are weighed for the couple
- Nakshatra: marriage favours a classical set — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Moola, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
- Yoga: Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are rejected outright
- Karana: Vishti (Bhadra) is the classic disqualifier
Our daily panchang shows every one of these limbs — with the dosha checklist — for any date and place.
2. The Season and the Month
Uttarayana is preferred for vivaha. Certain lunar months are traditionally favoured (Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha among them), while Adhika masa and Kshaya masa are excluded. Sankranti days, eclipse days, and the days around them are set aside.
3. Guru and Shukra Must Be Awake
A rule families sometimes learn about only at the last minute: marriages are not fixed while Jupiter (Guru) or Venus (Shukra) is combust — lost in the Sun's glare (moudhya, astangata) — or during Guru/Shukra bala doshas for the bride or groom. Whole months can drop out of a year this way, which is why good dates cluster and halls fill fast.
4. Lagna Shuddhi — the Moment Itself
Within a chosen day, the marriage lagna (the ascendant rising at the ceremony moment) gets its own examination: the 7th house from it must be empty, malefics kept out of key houses, benefics supporting the lagna, and the lagna itself strong — along with the Kartari and other checks around it. This is the true "muhurtha" — a window often less than an hour wide.
5. The Couple's Own Charts
Finally, everything is tested against both horoscopes:
- Tara Balam — the day's star counted from each person's janma nakshatra must be favourable
- Chandra Balam — the Moon's position from each rasi
- The running dashas of bride and groom
- And of course Guna Milan compatibility is settled before dates are discussed at all
This final layer is why no printed calendar can fix your muhurtha: the calendar does not know your stars.
