Guna Milan: Marriage Compatibility in Vedic Astrology

Guna Milan scores two birth charts across eight kootas totalling 36 points. What the score really means, what it misses, and when Mangal Dosha matters.

What Is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan (“matching of qualities”) is the classical Vedic method of comparing two birth charts before marriage. It examines eight kootas — factors of temperament, health, prosperity, and progeny — scoring a maximum of 36 gunas.

The Eight Kootas

  1. Varna (1): Spiritual compatibility and ego balance
  2. Vashya (2): Mutual influence and attraction
  3. Tara (3): Health and well-being of the couple
  4. Yoni (4): Physical and instinctive harmony
  5. Graha Maitri (5): Friendship of the Moon-sign lords — mental rapport
  6. Gana (6): Temperament (deva, manushya, rakshasa)
  7. Bhakoot (7): Emotional bond and family prosperity
  8. Nadi (8): Health of progeny — the heaviest factor

Reading the Score

  • Below 18: traditionally not recommended
  • 18–24: acceptable, average match
  • 25–32: very good match
  • 33–36: excellent (rare)

What the Score Misses

A high score is not the whole story. Two charts can score 30 while one partner runs a difficult Dasha at the wedding; Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction) can override an otherwise fine score unless matched or cancelled; and the seventh house, Venus, and Jupiter deserve their own examination. This is why elders insisted on a full chart reading, not just the number.

Checking Your Match

Our compatibility tools compute Guna Milan instantly from two birth details. For marriages, engagements, or when a score raises questions — especially Nadi or Bhakoot dosha — a personal consultation with Mrs. Madhavi Sharma examines both charts in full, including doshas, Dashas, and remedies where needed.
