How to Read a Telugu Panchangam Calendar: Tithi, Nakshatra and the Day’s Timings

A Telugu calendar is also a పంచాంగం. How to read the header, a single date square and the full day behind it — తిథి, నక్షత్రం, the amanta month and అధిక మాసం, Sankramana and Rahu Kalam — and why every timing depends on the city you live in.

A Calendar That Counts Two Ways

The calendar that hangs in a Telugu home does two jobs at once. It is an ordinary month of dates — the one that tells you when rent is due — and it is a పంచాంగం, the almanac that tells you which తిథి runs today, which నక్షత్రం the Moon is in, when Rahu Kalam falls, and which festival is coming. Every square carries both counts, and most people read only half of what is printed in it.

This guide walks through a Telugu panchangam calendar the way an elder reads one: the header first, then a single square, then the full day behind it.

The Header: Two Kinds of Month

The large title is the Gregorian month. The line under it is the part people skip: the lunar months that fall inside those thirty days, with the year numbers of two eras beside them — the Vikram Samvat and the Shalivahana Shaka.

Two lunar month names often appear together, because lunar months do not line up with Gregorian ones. September 2026, for example, carries the end of Shravana and the start of Bhadrapada.

How a Telugu month is counted. The Telugu calendar is amanta: a lunar month runs from new moon to new moon and ends on అమావాస్య. It is named for the solar sign the Sun enters during it — Chaitra is the month in which the Sun enters Mesha, Bhadrapada the one in which it enters Kanya, and so on. The day the Sun changes sign is సంక్రమణం (Sankranti), and a good calendar marks it with the exact time.

That naming rule explains the one month people find most confusing. About once every three years a lunation passes in which the Sun enters no new sign at all. That lunation carries no name of its own and is called అధిక మాసం (Adhika Masa), the extra month; the festivals belong to the month after it. When you see an "Adhika" mark beside the month name, that is what it means — nothing has gone wrong with the calendar.

North Indian calendars count the other way — purnimanta, month ending at the full moon — so for half of every month the same day carries a different month name there. A calendar that shows both saves a lot of confusion in families spread across states.

Reading One Square

Each date square is a summary of that day's panchangam. From top to bottom it usually shows:

  • The tithi, with a letter for the fortnight: S for శుక్ల పక్షం (Shukla, the waxing half) and K for కృష్ణ పక్షం (Krishna, the waning half). "Dashami K" is the tenth day of the waning fortnight.
  • The date in large type, with a moon symbol on పౌర్ణమి (Purnima, full moon) and on Amavasya.
  • Sunrise and sunset for the place the calendar is set to.
  • Moonrise, when the Moon rises that day.
  • The nakshatra the Moon is in.
  • A festival name in red when one falls that day.
  • Badges for the two events that change the month: a Sankramana badge with its time when the Sun changes sign, and a marker on the day a new lunar month begins.

The colours carry meaning too: a pale yellow square is Purnima, pale green is Amavasya, a deeper green marks a festival, pink is Sunday, and a red dot is today.

Why a Tithi Is Not a Day

This is the single most useful thing to understand about any panchangam.

A tithi is not twenty-four hours. It is the time the Moon takes to move twelve degrees further from the Sun, and because both move at varying speeds, a tithi lasts anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours. It begins at some moment of the day and ends at some moment of the next, and that moment is the same instant everywhere on Earth — only the clock time differs.

So the tithi written in a square is the day's summary, not a promise that it lasts from morning to night. Two things follow:

  • A tithi can fall entirely between two sunrises, beginning after one and ending before the next. No date carries its name, and a festival tied to it is observed on the day it actually ran inside.
  • A tithi can span two sunrises, so the same name appears on two consecutive dates.

Neither is a printing error. It is why the full day's panchangam gives an "upto" time for the tithi — the exact moment it ends — and why that time, not the square's label, is what decides a ritual.

The Full Day Behind the Square

Open a day and the complete panchangam appears. Its heart is the five limbs that give the panchangam its name — pancha (five) anga (limbs):

Each limb carries its own "upto" time, and when one ends mid-day the next one is listed too. The nakshatras themselves — what each one governs, and why the birth star matters — are covered in our guide to the 27 nakshatras.

Below the five limbs a full day also lists:

  • Sun and Moon times, with the length of the day and of the night.
  • The Moon sign and the Sun sign for the day.
  • The three inauspicious periodsరాహుకాలం (Rahu Kalam), Gulika Kalam and Yamagandam — each an eighth of the daylight. Why they are avoided, and how they are built from sunrise, is explained in our article on the three daily periods.
  • The day's windows: Abhijit Muhurta around local midday, అమృత కాలం (Amrit Kalam), and the two to avoid — వర్జ్యం (Varjyam) and దుర్ముహూర్తం (Dur Muhurtam).
  • Panchaka Rahita Muhurta and Udaya Lagna — the times at which each rasi is actually rising, which are markedly unequal because some signs rise faster than others.
  • The horas (హోరలు), the twenty-four planetary hours of the day and night.

Why the Calendar Must Know Where You Are

A printed calendar is made for one city. Its times are right there and drift everywhere else, because every window in the panchangam is measured from local sunrise.

Take one date — 10 October 2026, Mahalaya Amavasya — computed for three places:

  • Hyderabad: sunrise 6:08 AM, Rahu Kalam 9:05 to 10:34 AM
  • Visakhapatnam: sunrise 5:49 AM, Rahu Kalam 8:47 to 10:15 AM
  • Edison, New Jersey: sunrise 7:03 AM, Rahu Kalam 9:54 to 11:19 AM

Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam are in the same time zone and less than 500 km apart, yet the windows differ by almost twenty minutes. A family in New Jersey reading a calendar printed in Hyderabad would be off by far more.

The tithi shows the same effect from the other side. That Amavasya ends at 9:20 PM by Indian time — which in New Jersey is 11:50 AM the same day. The instant is identical; the day it shapes is not. For anyone living outside India, a calendar set to their own city is not a convenience. It is the only way the panchangam's times mean anything.

Three Mistakes People Make

  1. Taking the festival from the date alone. Festivals are fixed by tithi and lunar month, not by the Gregorian date, which is why Ganesh Chaturthi or Dussehra moves by weeks from one year to the next.
  2. Assuming the square's tithi lasts all day. Check the "upto" time before a vrat or a ritual.
  3. Using a calendar made for another city. Sunrise, Rahu Kalam and every muhurta window move with your location.
