Gulika Kalam is Saturn's portion of the day when the daylight from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. It is usually avoided for fresh beginnings, but several traditions hold it favourable for acts meant to endure — laying a foundation, planting, beginning a long observance.
Each period is one-eighth of the daylight of a particular day at a particular place, and sunrise and sunset change with the season and the city.
