Uparatna: Semi-Precious Alternatives to the Navaratna
Quality navaratna stones can be costly. Uparatna — semi-precious substitutes like Garnet, Amethyst, and Moonstone — offer the same planetary support at accessible prices.
What Are Uparatna?
Uparatna are the traditional substitute gemstones of Vedic astrology. When a primary navaratna is beyond budget — a fine Ruby or Blue Sapphire can cost lakhs — the shastras permit a semi-precious stone of the same planetary family, worn the same way.
The Substitute Map
- Sun (instead of Ruby): Garnet (గార్నెట్)
- Moon (instead of Pearl): Moonstone (చంద్రకాంతం), Rose Quartz
- Mars (instead of Red Coral): Carnelian, Bloodstone
- Mercury (instead of Emerald): Green Tourmaline, Peridot, Jade
- Jupiter (instead of Yellow Sapphire): Citrine (సిట్రిన్), Yellow Topaz
- Venus (instead of Diamond): White Zircon, Rock Crystal (స్ఫటికం)
- Saturn (instead of Blue Sapphire): Amethyst (అమెథిస్ట్), Iolite, Lapis Lazuli
- Rahu (instead of Hessonite): Hessonite Garnet, Agate
- Ketu (instead of Cat’s Eye): Amber
Do Substitutes Really Work?
Tradition holds that an uparatna carries the same planetary signature at gentler strength — often the right choice for first-time wearers, children, or while testing a stone’s effect before committing to the primary gem. Because they are gentler, uparatna are usually worn at higher carat weights, which is why our semi-precious rings are set at each stone’s traditional weight.
Quality Still Matters
A substitute must still be natural and untreated. A glass-filled “citrine” serves nobody. Every semi-precious stone at MSGemstones is personally authenticated by Mrs. Madhavi Sharma, exactly like our primary gems.
